THEME OF THE SERVICE
As disciples of Jesus we rightly long for the day when all the earth will be fully subjected to His reign. But as we wait, He has commanded us to diligently testify of Him in the power and boldness of the Spirit he has given us.
OPENING SCRIPTURE: Isaiah 66:10-23
10 “Rejoice with Jerusalem, and be glad for her,
all you who love her;
rejoice with her in joy,
all you who mourn over her;
11 that you may nurse and be satisfied
from her consoling breast;
that you may drink deeply with delight
from her glorious abundance.”
12 For thus says the Lord:
“Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river,
and the glory of the nations like an overflowing stream;
and you shall nurse, you shall be carried upon her hip,
and bounced upon her knees.
13 As one whom his mother comforts,
so I will comfort you;
you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.
14 You shall see, and your heart shall rejoice;
your bones shall flourish like the grass;
and the hand of the Lord shall be known to his servants,
and he shall show his indignation against his enemies.
Final Judgment and Glory of the Lord
15 “For behold, the Lord will come in fire,
and his chariots like the whirlwind,
to render his anger in fury,
and his rebuke with flames of fire.
16 For by fire will the Lord enter into judgment,
and by his sword, with all flesh;
and those slain by the Lord shall be many.
17 “Those who sanctify and purify themselves to go into the gardens, following one in the midst, eating pig's flesh and the abomination and mice, shall come to an end together, declares the Lord.
18 “For I know their works and their thoughts, and the time is coming to gather all nations and tongues. And they shall come and shall see my glory,
19 and I will set a sign among them. And from them I will send survivors to the nations, to Tarshish, Pul, and Lud, who draw the bow, to Tubal and Javan, to the coastlands far away, that have not heard my fame or seen my glory. And they shall declare my glory among the nations.
20 And they shall bring all your brothers from all the nations as an offering to the Lord, on horses and in chariots and in litters and on mules and on dromedaries, to my holy mountain Jerusalem, says the Lord, just as the Israelites bring their grain offering in a clean vessel to the house of the Lord. 21 And some of them also I will take for priests and for Levites, says the Lord.
22 “For as the new heavens and the new earth
that I make
shall remain before me, says the Lord,
so shall your offspring and your name remain.
23 From new moon to new moon,
and from Sabbath to Sabbath,
all flesh shall come to worship before me,
declares the Lord.
PASTORAL PRAYER
Hymn 1: Sing praise to God Who Reigns Above
Verse 1
Sing praise to God who reigns above, the God of all creation
The God of pow'r, the God of love, the God of our salvation
With healing balm my soul he fills, and ev'ry faithless murmur stills
To God all praise and glory
Verse 2
What God's almighty pow'r has made in mercy he is keeping
By morning glow or evening shade his eye is never sleeping
Within the kingdom of his might, lo! all is just and all is right
To God all praise and glory
Verse 3
The Lord is never far away, but through all grief distressing
An ever-present help and stay, our peace and joy and blessing
As with a mother's tender hand he leads his own, his chosen band
To God all praise and glory
Verse 4
Thus all my toilsome way along I sing aloud his praises
That all may hear the grateful song my voice unwearied raises
"Be joyful in the Lord, my heart! Both soul and body bear your part
to God all praise and glory!"
Second Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 15:20-28
20 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. 23 But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ. 24 Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power. 25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death. 27 For “God has put all things in subjection under his feet.” But when it says, “all things are put in subjection,” it is plain that he is excepted who put all things in subjection under him. 28 When all things are subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to him who put all things in subjection under him, that God may be all in all.
HYMN 2: ALL HAIL THE POWER OF JESUS NAME
Verse 1
All hail the pow'r of Jesus' name! Let angels prostrate fall
Bring forth the royal diadem, and crown him Lord of all
Bring forth the royal diadem, and crown him Lord of all
Verse 2
Ye chosen seed of Israel's race, ye ransomed from the fall
Hail him who saves you by his grace, and crown him Lord of all
Hail him who saves you by his grace, and crown him Lord of all
Verse 3
Let ev'ry kindred, ev'ry tribe on this terrestrial ball
To him all majesty ascribe, and crown him Lord of all
To him all majesty ascribe, and crown him Lord of all
Verse 4
Oh, that with yonder sacred throng we at his feet may fall
We'll join the everlasting song, and crown him Lord of all
We'll join the everlasting song, and crown him Lord of all
HYMN 3: THERE IS A REDEEMER
Verse 1
There is a Redeemer,
Jesus, God's own Son
precious Lamb of God, Messiah, Holy One.
Chorus
Thank you, O my Father
For giving us your Son
And leaving your Spirit till
The work on earth is done
Verse 2
Jesus, my Redeemer
Name above all names
Precious Lamb of God, Messiah
Hope for sinners slain
Chorus
Thank you, O my Father
For giving us your Son
And leaving your Spirit till
The work on earth is done
Verse 3
When I stand in glory
I will see his face
There I'll serve my King forever
In that holy place
Chorus
Thank you, O my Father
For giving us your Son
And leaving your Spirit till
The work on earth is done
Third Scripture Reading: Luke 24:44-49
44 Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, 47 and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”
HYMN 4: HOLY SPIRIT LIVING BREATH OF GOD
Verse 1
Holy Spirit, living Breath of God
Breathe new life into my willing soul
Bring the presence of the risen Lord
To renew my heart and make me whole
Cause your word to come alive in me
Give me faith for what I cannot see
Give me passion for your purity
Holy Spirit, breathe new life in me
Verse 2
Holy Spirit, come abide within
May your joy be seen in all I do
Love enough to cover ev'ry sin
In each thought, and deed, and attitude
Kindness to the greatest and the least
Gentleness that sows the path of peace
Turn my striving into works of grace
Breath of God, show Christ in all I do
Verse 3
Holy Spirit, from creation's birth
Giving life to all that God has made
Show your power once again on earth
Cause your church to hunger for your ways
Let the fragrance of our prayers arise
Lead us on the road of sacrifice
That in unity the face of Christ
Will be clear for all the world to see
OFFERING PRAYER
HYMN 5: FACING A TASK UNFINISHED
Verse 1
Facing a task unfinished
That drives us to our knees
A need that, undiminished
Rebukes our slothful ease
We who rejoice to know thee
Renew before thy throne
The solemn pledge we owe thee
To go and make thee known
Verse 2
Where other lords beside thee
Hold their unhindered sway
Where forces that defied thee
Defy thee still today
With none to heed their crying
For life, and love, and light
Unnumbered souls are dying
And pass into the night
Chorus
We go to all the world
With kingdom hope unfurled
No other name has pow'r to save
But Jesus Christ the Lord
Verse 3
We bear the torch that, flaming
Fell from the hands of those
Who gave their lives, proclaiming
That Jesus died and rose
Ours is the same commission
The same glad message ours
Fired by the same ambition
To thee we yield our pow'rs
Chorus
We go to all the world
With kingdom hope unfurled
No other name has pow'r to save
But Jesus Christ the Lord
Verse 4
O Father who sustained them
O Spirit who inspired
Savior, whose love constrained them
To toil with zeal untired
From cowardice defend us
From lethargy awake
Forth on thine errands send us
To labor for thy sake
Chorus x2
We go to all the world
With kingdom hope unfurled
No other name has pow'r to save
But Jesus Christ the Lord
Sermon: Acts 1:1-11 - Travis M.
1 In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, 2 until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. 3 He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.
4 And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
6 So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” 9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, 11 and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”
HYMN 6: O CHURCH ARISE
Verse 1
O church, arise and put your armor on
Hear the call of Christ our Captain
For now the weak can say that they are strong
In the strength that God has given
With shield of faith and belt of truth
We'll stand against the devil's lies
An army bold whose battle cry is "Love!"
Reaching out to those in darkness
Verse 2
Our call to war, to love the captive soul
But to rage against the captor
And with the sword that makes the wounded whole
We will fight with faith and valor
When faced with trials on ev'ry side
We know the outcome is secure
And Christ will have the prize for which he died
An inheritance of nations
Verse 3
Come, see the cross where love and mercy meet
As the Son of God is stricken
Then see his foes lie crushed beneath his feet
For the Conqueror has risen
And as the stone is rolled away
And Christ emerges from the grave
This vict'ry march continues till the day
Ev'ry eye and heart shall see him
Verse 4
So Spirit, come! Put strength in ev'ry stride
Give grace for ev'ry hurdle
That we may run with faith to win the prize
Of a servant good and faithful
As saints of old still line the way
Retelling triumphs of his grace
We hear their calls, and hunger for the day
When with Christ we stand in glory
